  11. I have a Matsushita 5XX SCSI-1 CD-ROM drive (OEMed by Roland DG) and I 
  12. wanted to lend it to a friend who owns a GVP A530 with a Maxtor 7312-S 
  13. (Part code unsure, but it's a 300 MB third height SCSI hard drive made by 
  14. Maxtor).

  16. The CD-ROM drive won't mount using ASIM CDFS or AmiCDROM.  And what's 
  17. worse, if I put a terminator on the CD-ROM, the hard drive won't boot.  
  18. Now that's strange, since the GVP doesn't have any termintors installed 
  19. (Yes I looked; there are pads for them but no terminators soldered in) 
  20. and the Maxtor has its terminators installed and enabled, and the 
  21. Maxtor's supplying terminator power.

  23. I tried using said CD-ROM on a DOS box, using an Adaptec 1520.  I could 
  24. only get the thing to work by slowing the transfer speed down to 5 MB/sec 
  25. (SCSI-1 spec, as opposed to 10 MB/sec SCSI-2) and turning off host 
  26. adapter synchronous negotiation (where the adapter tries to start a sync 
  27. transfer with the SCSI devices, which is unsupported in SCSI-1).

  29. So the drive works with said switches (effectively forcing it to SCSI-1) 
  30. and properly terminated.  But it doesn't work on the GVP A530.  If I try 
  31. to install it, the HD won't boot.  If I remove the terminator at the 
  32. other end, the HD will boot, but it will spin down, spin up, etc in the 
  33. middle of usage!  Not very healthy!  I don't have a way to disable 
  34. terminator power on the GVP or the CD-ROM drive, but I could disable 
  35. termpower on the maxtor if I had to.  Are there any other ideas?
